Bio for Pastor Herbert
Richard E. Herbert, Pastor of Canaan Christian Covenant Baptist Church was born in Portsmouth, VA but reared in Oakland, CA. After graduating from Berkeley High School he attended the University of San Francisco where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting.
An accountant by trade, Richard worked for the San Francisco based certified professional accounting firm O’Rourke, Sacher & Moulton (now part of RSM McGladrey) from 1988 to 1991. He worked for Kaiperm Federal Credit Union in Oakland, CA from 1991 to 2006; from May 2000 to September 2006 he served as the President & CEO and helped Kaiperm grow from $90,000,000 in assets to over $130,000,000. During this time he completed the Credit Union Executive Society’s (CUES) CEO Institute where he earned their Certified Chief Executive (CCE) Designation in May 2005 upon completing their three year executive education program at Wharton, Cornell and the University of Virginia’s Darden Business School. He is also a graduate of the National Association of Federal Credit Union’s Leadership Institute and specializes in developing high performing leadership teams. He served as the Controller for the billion dollar San Francisco Federal Credit Union in San Francisco, CA from January 2008 to October 2023.
Pastor Herbert is a charter member of Canaan and served faithfully under the tutelage of the Reverend Dr. C. Cedric Claiborne, the organizing pastor of Canaan. During his membership he has served as Chairman of the Deacons, Chairman of the Trustees and as Sunday School Superintendent. Rev. Herbert was ordained as a deacon in April 1997 and acknowledged his call to the Gospel ministry on May 27, 2007. Dr. Claiborne licensed him on December 23, 2007; and he was ordained by the Reverend Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr. of the historic Allen Temple Baptist Church of Oakland, CA on July 20, 2008. Rev. Herbert accepted the call to pastor Canaan Christian Covenant on October 12, 2008.
Rev. Herbert accepted the pastorate with enthusiasm, excitement and a sincere commitment to serve God’s people. He has a passion for teaching and excellence in ministry. He believes that God blesses and honors those who give their lives wholeheartedly to Christ Jesus and are committed to loving and serving his people through ministry opportunities.
